MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER: Ongoing
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is partnering with Parsons to develop layout and patient service designs for a new satellite chemotherapy lab.
Site: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Challenge: Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Innovation Lab engaged Parsons to create the site and service design for a new satellite chemotherapy site in Brooklyn. The design was to be based specifically on a thoughtful consideration of patients’ experience.
Outcome: For the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters, faculty and students from Parsons AAS Interior Design have proposed designs for the satellite site. Proposals included meditation spaces and individualized lighting motifs for each room, as well as the provision of patient arts programming that would take advantage of Brooklyn’s local cultural offerings.
Memorial Sloan Kettering is working with their team of architects to integrate elements of the proposals into the final design of the space.
At the end of the spring 2009 semester, a group of faculty members hosted a day-long service-design workshop with staff from Memorial Sloan Kettering. The staff divided into teams, considered problems the site might face, and developed services to meet patients’ needs. After the workshop, the staff left with the tools to continue this process with their colleagues.
Upcoming projects include having teams of students work with Memorial Sloan Kettering on the role of technology in diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
