  • Helio San Miguel was born in Madrid. He holds and Ph.D. in Philosophy and History of Science and Technology, and an M.F.A. in Film and TV Direction and Production from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Helio is the editor of World Film Locations: Mumbai (Intellect, 2012) and co-editor of World Film Locations: Barcelona (Intellect, 2013), both part of a series of books that explores the representation of cities in cinema. He is also the co-editor of El Nuevo Bollywood [The New Bollywood] (Secuencias, n. 36, 2013). He has contributed to (Re)viewing Creative, Critical and Commercial Practices in Contemporary Spanish Cinema (Intellect, 2014), World Film Locations: Rome (Intellect, 2014), Ciudades de cine (Cátedra, 2014), World Film Locations: Madrid (Intellect, 2011), The Cinema of Latin America (Wallflower Press, 2003), and Tierra en Trance (Alianza Editorial, 1999), and has published numerous film articles. Helio is also the writer and director of Blindness (, an award-winning 32-minute fiction film selected in over thirty film festivals including New Filmmakers New York and the European Film Festival. He has also published "The Rise of Technology," included in El Pensamiento Científico en la Sociedad Actual (Madrid, 2006). He was awarded grant for academic projects in 2014 and 2011, and is a member of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies and the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS). RESEARCH INTERESTS: FILM / MEDIA: Film analysis and aesthetics; Latin American and Indian cinema; silent cinema; Western European and American cinema. PHIL / TECH: Impact of technological innovation; technology as an engine for social and political change; 16th to 19th century philosophy and history of science and technology; methodology of science.
