    Scherezade has been involved in the Arts for as long as she can remember. Her drawings are her memories. These drawings are visual interpretations of her surroundings, for example, sounds and movements of daily life.

    As a very young child, she showed great promise as an artist, so her parents enrolled her in Art school. She was fortunate to study under two very special and talented painters, Don Elias Delgado and Nidia Serra.

     

    Scherezade, born in the Dominican Republic (Oct 1966) has lived in New York since arrived to study in 1986 to attend Parsons School of Design with a full scholarship based on the quality of her portfolio. Her work frequently evokes memories of faraway home and the hopes and dreams that accompany planting roots in a new land. Garcia’s work is included in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington DC, El Museo del Barrio in NYC, The Housatonic Museum of Art in CT,and El Museo de Arte Moderno  in Santo Domingo, DR. Her solo exhibitions include “Paradise redefined” at Lehman College Art Gallery, Bronx, NY; Island of many Gods at the Salena Gallery, and “Theories of Freedom” @ The Humanities Art Gallery in Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY. Also, Loosely Coupled, Governors island NYC, This Side of Paradise-No Longer Empty, Souvenir at The Jersey City Museum, Jersey City, NJ; Stories of Fallen Angels, Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, DR; Mary Anthony Gallery and Leonora Vega Gallery, NYC.

    Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions including “Our America:The Latino Presence in American Art”, Smithsonian American Art Museum , “This Side of Paradise-No Longer Empty“, Bronx, NY, This Skin I’m in;Contemporary Dominican Art from El Museo del Barrio’s permanent collection and Merengue! Visual Rhythms also at El Museo del Barrio, NY, NY; The Caribbean Abroad; Contemporary Arts and Latino Migration, Newark Museum of Art, Newark, NJ.

    Her work was included in the Caribbean Biennial in Santo Domingo, DR in 2001 and The Havana Biennial in 2000 in Havana, Cuba, also she is a founding member of DYPG (Dominican-York Projecto Grafico. Scherezade Garcia received her AAS from Altos de Chavon School of Design, La Romana, DR, her BFA from Parsons School of Design, NY, NY and received her MFA from The City College of New York, NYC 2010.

     

    Scherezade lives with her husband, NYC photographer William Vazquez, and her two budding artist daughters, Gabrielle and Montserrat in Brooklyn, NY, where she also has her studio.     The following dates highlight Scherezade’s career;

     

    1986- Awarded The Parsons Institutional Scholarship and The Dana work program Grant NYC.

    1988- Graduated with honors, work selected to represent the Illustration and Fine Arts Department and Fashion Illustration Department Senior show invitations.

    1988-93- Designer and Fashion Illustrator for Couture accessories collections for Carlos Falchi.

    1991-“Crossings” at Henry Settlement, Louis Abrons Art Center, NYC.

    1991- “Dominican Artists beyond borders” Museum of Modern Art, Santo Domingo, DR

    1992-Creative Arts Workshop, New Haven, Connecticut . Acquired lithography for permanent collection.

    1992-“ 500 Yolas” at Hostos Community College Art Gallery.

    1994- Selected artist by The Hispanic Heritage Committee for The City of New York to develop three posters for the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The original paintings were unveiled at The New York City Public Library by Mayor Mario Cuomo.

    1995- Solo show at El Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, DR

    1995- Artist in Residence at Altos de Chavon.

    1996-2000

    2007- “Paradise Redefined” Solo show at Lehman College Art Gallery, reviewed by The New York Times Art Critic, Benjamin Genocchio.

    2007.Recipient of Lehman College Art Grant.

     2008- “Morir Soñando/Dying Dreaming” solo show @ District&Co.-The Gallery

    2008- Commissioned to create a large-scale outside sculpture for “In Response:Summer projects” @ Glyndor Gallery. Wave Hill, Bronx,NY

    2010- “Breaking the waters” two artists(Scherezade and iliana Emilia) show @ San Francis College Art Gallery, Brooklyn Heights, NY

    2012- Commissioned to create the image for “The Siglo XXI Biennal Conference: Forging the Future of Latinos in a time of crisis”
