Specialist in material culture, visual culture, and design studies. David co-edited (with Hazel Clark) Design Studies: A Reader (Berg, 2009) and his book Visualizing American Empire: Orientalism and Imperialism in the Philippines was just published by the University of Chicago Press (2010). Other publications include articles and reviews in Prospects: An Annual of American Cultural Studies, Journal of Asian American Studies, American Quarterly, Journal of Design History, American Periodicals, and other journals. David has a forthcoming article on hotel design and housekeeping that will appear in the peer-reviewed journal Design and Culture in 2011. His new book project is titled Do Not Disturb: Design, Hotels, and Labor and is under advance contract with the University of Chicago Press. David has also given papers at numerous academic conferences.
