Associate Professor of Art History, Art and Design History and Theory
I am a scholar of postwar and contemporary art history and theory, and hold a joint appointment in the Dept. of Arts, Lang College, and the School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons. My research interests trace the radical transformation of the art object in the postwar era, including the emergence of non-traditional, time-based media; performance strategies and their relationship to technologies of reproduction (including video and sound); and the development of linguistically-based artworks. My more recent scholarship engages the socio-economic conditions of contemporary art, in particular in relationship to the collapse of the Cold War and the advent of globalization; as well as the impact of social media. I have also maintained a longstanding profile as a critic and independent curator, where I seek to apply my scholarship to critical texts and exhibitions that reach a broader audience outside the academy.
