    Raul Zamudio

    Profile

    I am a curator, educator and arts writer. I was born in Tijuana, Mexico, raised in San Diego, California, and based in New York City since 1990. As an art exhibition curator, I have curated or co-curated more than 150 group and solo exhibitions in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Some of the large-scale exhibitions include: curator, Fish Story, Contempo: 2016 International Contemporary Art Festival, Varna, Bulgaria; curator, Lady with the X-Ray Eyes, Contempo: 2014 International Contemporary Art Festival, Varna, Bulgaria; co-curator, Here Is Where We Jump! La Bienal 2013, El Museo Del Barrio, NY, NY, USA; co-curator, City Without Walls, 2010 Liverpool Biennial, UK; co-curator, Constellations: 2009 Beijing 798 Biennial, Beijing, China ; co-curator, Turn and Widen: 2008 Seoul International Media Art Biennial, Seoul, Korea; artistic director/curator, Garden of Delights: 2008 Yeosu International Contemporary Art Festival, Yeosu, Korea; and co-curator, Poles Apart, Poles Together, 2005 Venice Biennial, Venice, Italy.

    As an arts writer, more than 200 of my texts have been published; many of my publications have been translated into other languages: Bulgarian, Chinese, Finnish, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish. I was US correspondent for Milan-based Flash Art, contributor to Madrid-based [Art Notes], contributor to London-based Contemporary, contributor to Seoul-based Eyeball, and am currently a Corresponding Editor, Art Nexus, Miami/Bogota. Other writings appear in other periodicals including TRANS, Zingmagazine, Journal of the West, Tema Celeste, La Tempestad, Art in Culture, MAG, Framework: The Finnish Art Review, Public Art, NY ARTS, Berliner Kunst, and the artist periodical SUBLIME. I studied art history at the C.U.N.Y Graduate Center, Columbia University, and the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU; and was a Helena Rubinstein Fellow in Critical Studies, Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program.

    I have been teaching art history since 1996 including general survey courses, and more focused areas such as Contemporary art and visual culture, Latin American art and visual culture, Modern art and visual culture, Non-western art and visual culture, and Pre-Hispanic art and visual culture.
