    Profile

Margot Bouman is an Assistant Professor of Visual Culture at The New School and the founding director of the new B.F.A. in Design History and Practice offered at Parsons School of Design. Previously, she served as founding co-director of The New School’s cross-college certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies and as Associate Dean for the School of Art and Design History and Theory at Parsons. Bouman holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. (2009) in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester, where she taught in the Department of Art and Art History. Recent awards and fellowships include a nomination for a Distinguished University Teaching Award (2017/18), an Art Writing Workshop (The Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program), and a GIDEST research fellowship offered through The New School (2017/18).

During her GIDEST fellowship year, Bouman began work on a book about the interplay between the avant-garde movement and broadcast television that took place between the 1940s and the 1980s. Through the work of artists including Nam June Paik, Harun Farocki, Cindy Sherman and Douglas Gordon, the book explores television as a new artistic medium in modern art. Bouman is currently writing a book for Bloomsbury Publishing on the recursive nature of sampling as a site-specific practice, which reflects on contemporary knowledge production systems such as serialism, the grid in modernist art, and online information distribution. Bouman has also contributed to a variety of academic publications, including an article on the artist Christian Marclay’s The Clock, which appeared in The Journal of Curatorial Studies (2015).
