Since graduating from the Parsons School of Design in 1967, I have spent my career as an promotion and editorial designer for such companies as American Heritage Publishing, and as Creative Director for Newsweek and Book of the Month Club.

In intervening years, I also ran my own design company, Zaino Design, with such clients as the Money Magazine, Forbes, TimeWarner, and CBS.

A few years ago I left my last position at Doubleday Entertainment as Executive Creative Director to pursue an increased teaching schedule and re-entered the world of freelance designing.

Partnering with both Lauren Stransky in 2008 at Stransky Studio, design and marketing company, and with Pentimento Design,Inc. as Brand Consultant in 2012, a visual communications and design studio, NYC & Balitmore, Md., my goal is to continue to uphold the highest standards in design and marketing and provide service to clients that share the same passion for excellence.

I have taught several courses in Communication Design as an associate part time professor at Parsons School of Design for the past 35 years. I also taught Capstone Thesis at FIT in the MFA Illustration Department from 2009 to 2016 and taught Designing with Typography and Publication Design at Altos De Chavon School of Design in the Dominican Republic during their Winter and Summer semesters.

In 2009 I returned from an interesting month in China where a group of Parsons students and professors collaborated with students from Tsinghua University in Beijing on various design projects for Nokia and The United Nations.  And, in 2012 I traveled to India’s West Coast to pursue my interest in the typography of the many regions in the North and South by photographing hand painted signs and walls.

After photographing these signs I returned home to continue to photograph and then “remix” the symbols that I saw around me everyday. The art of "Re-Mixing" reflects my love of letterforms of all kinds, especially hand lettering, calligraphy, and typography and my fascination with digital collage by which the mundane and literal is transformed into the abstract and innovative. That is the work I am now exploring.

I commuted for years between my studio in NYC and my home in the western Catskill Mountains. My dogs spent their time hunting frogs and snakes and tearing with wild abandon through the flowerbeds that I so lovingly tended. Now that I am a full time New York City dweller, I clutter my apartment and studio with antiques - stuff  (I collect alphabets and typography books), enjoy cooking for family and friends, running to see the next great art exhibit, and attending a good performance at The Met. I try to get out on a river to flyfish (I will tell you about the “one” that got away!) and I am, through good times and bad, a diehard Yankee fan.
