Opening Reception: Flat-Pack and Micro-Manufacturing Exhibition

5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Parsons’ BFA Product Design program presents an exhibition highlighting two key issues within contemporary design.

The Flat-Pack Studio addresses the needs of spatial efficiency. Faculty member Mark Bechtel challenged students to design a piece of furniture that can be packed flat in a UPS box or tube. Each project includes the design and construction of a full-scale working furniture prototype, packaging, and an assembly manual. Final projects were shipped to Blu Dot SoHo, where they were assembled and reviewed by a jury of critics.

The Micro-Manufacturing Studio focuses on opportunities for the designer-maker. Faculty member Daniel Michalik challenged students to design, model, prototype and test a family of household accessories or furniture designed with smaller-scale, self-sufficient production in mind. Issues of cost and production scale were at the center of design decisions, and the prototyped results were evaluated by respected professionals from the NYC design community.
