A video presentation by smudge studio examines the entangled infrastructures of nuclear waste transportation and the United States highway system. Generated from original documentation of nuclear waste storage facilities in Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and New York, this meditation-in-motion punctuates the streaming highway system with its travelers’ encounters with nuclear waste transport, disposal cells, and sites of remediation. The design and maintenance of infrastructures capable of safely containing nuclear materials, for the millions of years required, is a challenge for which there are few models. The video invites the viewer to consider how our contemporary life, landscape and infrastructure will be shaped imaginatively and materially by this powerful need.

The SJDC presentation is the first of an exhibition relay that will travel to the Santa Fe Institute of Art, NM, the Center for Land Use Interpretation, UT, Rocky Flats Cold War Museum, CO, and the Center for Art + Environment, Nevada Museum of Art, NV.

smudge studio is a collaboration between artists Elizabeth Ellsworth and Jamie Kruse. Their multi-media practice seeks to invent aesthetic provocations that assist humans in feeling for themselves the reality of contemporary forces and scales of change, natural and human-made.
