FAQs for Alumni

Who can utilize Parsons Career Services?

Parsons Career Services offers resources for matriculated students and graduates of Parsons degree programs (bachelor's, master's, AAS). Degree seeking students of other divisions of The New School may seek advising at walk-in hours and attend career events (contact the main office for details). At this time, we do not provide services for students or alumni of Continuing Education or Certificate programs.

What types of resources does Career Services have?

We have a variety of resources that give our students and alumni a competitive edge. Here are a few highlights:

  • Workshops and panel discussions for job seekers

Will Career Services find a job for me?

Career Services does not provide job placement, but we offer many resources that can assist you in your search, which are described above. Advisors have the following expectations of graduates using the resources of Career Services:

Exploring career options and creating a satisfying professional life is ultimately each individual's responsibility.Alumni are expected to approach the career advising process with a proactive attitude:

To come to appointments having made basic preparation, such as writing a resume and preparing a portfolio.

To actively use the online job board, on-campus career events, alumni workshops, and the job search handbook.

To take responsibility for the job search process and not rely solely on the Career Services staff.

How do I begin my job search?

Start by updating your resume. Attend as many networking events in your field as possible to meet working professionals and make valuable contacts. Talk to a Career Services advisor to learn about about various career paths that may be open to you.

How long does a resume and cover letter review take?

Career Services can help you make the most of your education and work experience by reviewing your job application materials. Post your resume to the Parsons Online Job Board and your advisor will review your resume within seven business days. For instructions on how to gain access to the Parsons Online Job Board, email parsonscareers@newschool.edu. You will receive an email when the review is complete.

I don't know how to write a resume or cover letter. Do you have a guide book that reviews the basics?

The Parsons Job Search Guide (Adobe PDF) is a must-read for anyone seeking an internship or a job. It includes sample resumes and cover letters along with job-search tips and resources.

What is the Parsons online job board? how do I gain access to it as an alumnus?

The Parsons online job board is a comprehensive online job database of more than 30,000 registered employers. It's a great place to find up-to-date internship and job postings.

Parsons alumni have unlimited access to the online job board after they graduate. To gain access to this service, contact Career Services to receive a login ID and password instructions. Email parsonscareers@newschool.edu or call 212.229.8940. Give the office assistant your full name (if the name on your diploma is different, include that name as well), contact information, graduation date, degree, major, and your Parsons student ID number (N########).

How often can I see a career services advisor? What if I miss an appointment?

Each student/alumnus is limited to two appointments per semester. If you cannot make an appointment, you are welcome to reschedule with 24-hours notice. If two appointments are missed or canceled without 24-hours notice or missed, you cannot make another appointment until the next semester. If youo arrives more than 15 minutes late to an appointment, Career Services reserves the right to reschedule. These policies ensure that as many students/alumni as possible have access to our services.
