• Current Students

  • As a Parsons student learning to be a designer, you may face challenges both in and outside of the classroom. The advising staff acknowledges the diversity of the student population and approaches issues holistically, recognizing that a variety of factors influence academic performance. The overarching objectives of advising are to provide accurate, timely information and create a supportive environment to help you make academic decisions such as selecting a major, creating a plan of study, choosing whether or where to study abroad, or taking a leave of absence.

  • Getting To Know Your Advisor

Advisors have extensive knowledge of campus resources and will show you how to navigate university systems and procedures. They also act as a liaison between you and Student Success staff and will acquaint you with procedures for communicating with faculty and other academic leadership when policy questions such as academic integrity, grade appeals, and academic standing arise.

You are assigned to an advisor based on your program and year of study and, in some cases, your last name. You can find your advisor's name, office location, photo, bio, and contact information through Starfish, the Student Success Network.

Scheduling An Appointment With Your Advisor

It is easy to schedule an appointment with your academic advisor; you can book appointments and sign up for group sessions in MyNewSchool. Just follow these steps to schedule an advising appointment:

    • Go to my.newschool.edu and log in.
    • Click on the Academics tab.
    • Find Starfish and click the “Access Starfish” link.
    • A new window or tab will open. Click on the “My Success Network” button on the left.
    • You’ll see your academic advisor in the My Success Network list. Click on the “Schedule appointment” link under your advisor’s name to go to his or her calendar.
    • Look for available times, as indicated by a green plus sign and the words “Sign Up.”
    • When you find a time that works for you, click on “Sign Up.”
    • Be sure to indicate whether your appointment will be in person, over the phone, or by Skype by choosing the correct location.

    Developing An Academic Plan

Whether you are trying to decide on a major or have already selected one, you can use DegreeWorks to explore your options and to monitor your degree progress. DegreeWorks will show you all of the courses required for your degree, as well as all the classes you have completed thus far. You can find out more about how to use this tool in the DegreeWorks tutorial. DegreeWorks is also available in MyNewSchool.

To learn about the courses you'll take and to see courses offered by other colleges of The New School, use the University Course Catalog. The course catalog links to the schedule of classes, where you can find the days and times that classes are offered.

There are many services on campus to assist and support students. You can find information on available services and, in some cases, schedule appointments using either Starfish or the Students page.

    Academic Policies

The New School Academic Catalog sets forth academic policies and procedures relating to academic integrity and honesty, transfer credits, academic regulations and procedures, grades and grading, grade appeal policy, grades of incomplete, academic standing and progress, attendance, and program requirements. You are responsible for knowing and understanding the policies and procedures published in the catalog. View current and archived New School and Parsons Academic Catalogs.
