Adjoining Glass Castles: Privacy and Intimacy in Corporate Social Media
Areas of expertise:
Economic Sociology, Sociology of Media, Social Networks & Sociology of Culture Profile
I am a sociologist working in mixed-method social research on public and private dynamics of media technologies. I develop new approaches for examining the quantitative realities of mediated human behavior and find new tools to studying the qualitative experiences that engender them. I have worked with technology firms, non-profits and universities in understanding mediated realities and my work has been featured in journals such as Information, Communication and Society. Information about my current research and projects are available on the projects section of my website.
Dissertation abstract
This dissertation examines the use of social media technologies for the corporate workplace and the effect of such use on individual's perception and enactment of privacy and intimacy. Using a combination of virtual ethnography and interview, the research demonstrates that (a) use of social media tools for the workplace tends to commoditize intimacy, combining personal and work spaces for the purposes of humanizing the corporation and professionalizing workers' intimate spaces. Additionally, (b) use of such tools tends to make the company workplace more visible to the world at the same time as it erects walls of confidentiality and ownership, causing both intimate and professional conflicts of interest.
