Voices from Prison
The course examines how writing responds to the ordeal of confinement and how it defines itself by virtue of its separation from the world. Texts on the reading list explore limits and depths of human will in relation to time, one's own body and other bodies; they consider how justice served affects the survival of human values. Readings are not limited to one genre of literature or critical inquiry and are geographically and temporally broad. Critical focus is on the conditions and forms in which an isolated voice speaks, the goals that it seeks to achieve, its narrative strategies, and its relationship with the audience.
