This seminar addresses philosophical issues that arise in
connection with painting, photography and film. We will consider questions of
normative aesthetics and meta-aesthetics, paying special attention to
discussions of aesthetic realism and modernism in the arts. Required texts for
the course will include works of philosophy, criticism and art history. We will
read writings of, among others,André
Bazin, Stanley Cavell, Denis Diderot,
Michael Fried, Ernst Gombrich, Siegfried Kracauer, Susie Linfield, V.F.
Perkins, Susan Sontag and Richard Wollheim.
