Term:
Spring 2012
Subject Code:
GLIB
Course Number:
5820
Starting with readings from Lessing, Herder and other Germans before moving from the English Romantics through 21st century critics, we will explore how and with what implications. Shakespeare came to be seen as the preeminent writer of the modern age. The aim of the course will be to use the rise of Shakespeare's reputation (with the play Hamlet as our touchstone) as a lens through which to explore broader issues of aesthetic and political modernity.
