Spinoza's Ethics
Term:
Spring 2012
Subject Code:
GPHI
Course Number:
6553
This seminar offers a close reading and commentary of Spinoza's Ethics. Shorter texts will be analyzed alongside Spinoza's main works, although our central concern will be to disentangle the interweaving threads of argument within Spinoza's greatest masterpiece. Spinoza's philosophical revolution will be seen both in a new way to formulate old problems and in his subversive underlying program of a philosophy of immanence that naturalizes man, reason, ethics, and God and claims to respond more adequately than religion itself to religion's own highest concerns.
