New Students

All new students will be assigned a New School email account within five to seven business days of receipt of their tuition deposit. To access your email, follow these steps:

1. Locate your New School ID number in your Admission Hub.
2. Look up your net ID.
3. Log in to MyNewSchool, clicking on the Apps icon (three horizontal lines located in the upper right portion of the screen), and selecting Email. You can also go directly to mail.newschool.edu.

Once you're enrolled, all official university email communications will be sent only to your New School email address, so be sure to check it regularly.

Starting in fall 2024, all first-year students enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program at our New York City campus will be automatically signed up for on-campus housing for their first year at newly reduced housing rates.

We want to make the process as smooth as possible for you. That’s why we’ve simplified the housing selection process for all new students. All you need to do is submit your housing preferences by 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14, so that we can make sure you are matched with your ideal roommate in a residence hall that suits your needs and preferences. Housing assignments will be released in late-June.

The New School requires all enrolled students to present a final official transcript and relevant proof of graduation or final exam documents before the start of their first semester of classes. All final official transcripts must indicate the date of graduation.

We strongly recommend that transcripts be sent in time to be received in the Office of Admission by October 1 for students beginning their studies in the fall semester. If you have special or extenuating circumstances, please contact [email protected].

Failure to submit the required documentation for your degree program will result in a hold on your account. A hold prevents registration for subsequent semesters and could jeopardize your financial aid awards.

We accept electronic transcripts through platforms that include but are not limited to the Common Application (including their integrated partners), National Student Clearinghouse, Parchment Exchange, SCOIR, ScribOrder, and TrueCopy.

Academic advising begins with the selection of classes for your first semester and continues throughout your time at The New School. Academic advisors are here to help you define your goals, identify learning opportunities aligned with your academic interests, assist you with understanding university policies and requirements, and much more. Your academic advisor will be assigned to you on the basis of your last name, year, program of study, or major.

New students will begin the process of registering for fall classes in June. Once you have submitted your deposit, you will receive an email introducing you to your academic advisor and providing you with registration information. The add/drop period for all full-term courses ends for students at 11:59 p.m. EDT on September 10, 2024. 

Start with your best foot forward by choosing how you want to present yourself to the New School community. Review the requirements and submit your color photo in the Card Services online portal. Once your photo is approved, it will be your profile picture in your MyNewSchool account and be printed on your official university ID card (newcard). This card must be presented for building access, library lending, meal plan purchases, and other purposes.

Students Planning to Live on Campus
If you will be living in on-campus housing, you must submit a color photo as soon as possible, so that your newcard will be ready for you to pick up when you move into the residence hall. This card will serve as your room key and grant you access to campus facilities and student services, so if you do not submit your photo in a timely way, your move-in process will be delayed.

Off-Campus Students
Even if you are not living in a New School residence hall, you still need a newcard to access campus resources. You must submit your color photo as soon as possible, so that your card can be printed before you arrive on campus.

You will be able to pick up your card during Orientation or when you first arrive on campus. If you have any questions, please email Card Services at [email protected]. 

If you have any questions, please contact Campus Card Services at [email protected]. For students who were previously enrolled in a New School program and already have a newcard, no action is required.

Visit the Immunizations page to learn what you are required to submit to the university. The page also includes important information about immunization clinics and exemptions.

All immunization dates and records must be entered and uploaded to the Student Health Services Portal, where they will be reviewed and verified by Health Services staff.

The university partners with University Health Plans to provide access to the UnitedHealthCare StudentResources health insurance plan, with the option to waive the plan for those who already have comparable coverage in their place of study.

All new students must either complete the enrollment form or submit a waiver form for the spring 2024 semester, and again each school year. The spring 2024 enrollment and waiver forms will be available beginning December 6 at universityhealthplans.com/tns. The deadline to submit an enrollment or waiver form is Monday, February 12, 2024.

Those who do not take action by this deadline will be automatically enrolled in the plan after the deadline has passed and will be responsible for paying the health insurance fee. We recommend that you submit the enrollment form at least two weeks before January 15 to ensure that your coverage is active on the plan’s January 15 start date.

Current Address and Emergency Contact Information
All new students must provide their current address and emergency contact information. To update this information, log in to MyNewSchool and visit the Me tab, where you will find links to "Update Student Address Information" and "Update Emergency Contact Information" in the Student Information portlet. If this information changes, please return to MyNewSchool to update it.

New School Alerts
The university uses this communication system to send messages to cell phones (text and voice), email addresses, and landlines during an urgent situation affecting The New School. Visit the Services tab in MyNewSchool and find the New School Alerts portlet to confirm that your contact information is correct.

Tuition Policy and Payment Information
Fall 2024 billing statements will be available in July. Please note that you must either pay your account balance in full or be up-to-date on a payment plan on or before the tuition deadline to remain in good financial standing with the university. To view and pay your bill, sign up for a payment plan, or designate a family member to make payments on your behalf, visit the Student Accounts portlet in the Me tab of MyNewSchool.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the University Refund Policy and Schedule to change your class schedule without financial penalty.

Financial Aid (Domestic Students Only)
All new domestic students who have submitted a tuition deposit should already have completed the financial aid process. If you have not yet applied for aid, visit the Office of Financial Aid website for information and instructions.

If you are eligible for financial aid (or scholarships) and have a completed application on file, you can check the status online by logging in to MyNewSchool and accessing your financial aid information in the Financial Aid Requirements section. All new students receiving financial aid in the form of federal government-supported student loans must complete an Entrance Loan Counseling session online at studentaid.gov.

If you have not yet paid your tuition deposit, please visit your Admission Hub before continuing. 

All new students are expected to attend Orientation. For the fall 2024 semester, Orientation will be held August 19–23, 2024. Registration will be launched in July, and more information will be sent to your New School email.

You can authorize a parent or family member to view selected academic information, such as your class schedule, grades, or unofficial transcripts by following these instructions. Once you complete these steps, your parent or family member will receive an email with directions for logging in and setting up their profile. If your parent or family member needs extra help, you can share this guide for families. 

To authorize a parent or family member to view and pay your bill, visit the Student Accounts section under the Services tab in MyNewSchool.

In mid-June, admitted students will be enrolled in the Narwhal Transitions course, which supports them in their first semester of study on campus. This non-graded course introduces students to important campus resources and the academic disciplines they’ll explore here, along with important policies they need to read and acknowledge. This course offers new content each week for a total of six weeks, along with weekly live supplemental webinar events. Check your New School email in June for more information.
