Students from Parsons The New School for Design, Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy, and Stevens Institute of Technology have teamed up to compete in the Solar Decathlon, a biennial competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy that challenges college teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses to be exhibited on the National Mall.

Taking the competition beyond the mall and into the community, the team is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Washington D.C. and the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development to create affordable housing in the northeastern DC neighborhood of Deanwood, where the solar-powered house will live following the competition as part of a two-family home being built from the ground up in Deanwood.

In September 2010, the team hosted a "site-warming" event at the Deanwood site to introduce the project to the community.
