Post-Master's Professional Certificate: Leadership and Change

Leading Change

With capable leadership, change initiatives encounter less resistance, and a powerful alignment of people and resources can be created to support them. New opportunities are seized and chronic problems can be addressed in ways that have staying power. When the need for change becomes essential in organizations, communities, and societies, it is critical that change be led, not imposed. We do not see organizational change as a management process; we see it as a leadership initiative.

The Milano School has been a center of research and practice in leadership development, consultation and change, and progressive policy for more than 40 years. The Leadership and Change certificate program emphasizes learning in action and provides tools, time, and structure for participants to apply the learning to their own organizational situations. Students learn to transcend conventional wisdom and embrace proven models of change leadership.

Our program prepares students to critically assess methods for effecting change in many settings: local communities, organizations, and social movements, to name a few. We challenge students to explore how their personal identities and experiences influence the ways in which they engage with the people they live and work with.

An Action-Oriented, Values-Based Approach

Leading change requires examining values, engaging in honest dialogue about what works and what doesn't, and trying out new ideas in organizational settings. Students in this post-master's certificate program test their ideas and skills in real projects for real clients, discuss their experiences with the faculty and fellow students, and return to their clients with new insight. The program prepares them for boundary-spanning roles in leadership and management, organizing and advocacy, social entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, sustainability management, internal and external consulting, and human resources leadership development.
