Milano Finance Fellow Program

How many Finance Fellows are there? The Finance Lab typically has a class of ten Finance Fellows. Usually, five are first year students and five are in their second year.

What are the requirements for Finance Fellows?

  • Must be a full-time student.
  • Must have graduated college with at least a 3.0 GPA and must maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the Milano graduate program .
  • Must attend an orientation and weekly seminars and field trips (3 hours per week, usually on Thursday mornings).
  • Must take three finance related courses: (a) Elements of Finance (b) Public Finance and Fiscal Management or Financial Management in Nonprofit Organizations (c) Public/Private Ventures, Housing and Real Estate Development, Capital Markets and Development Finance or Urban Economic Development.
  • Must have a demonstrated interest in community development finance. For first year students this could be work experience, coursework or a convincing personal statement. Second year students must have taken at least one or more finance courses in their first year. Generally, Finance Fellows have had some previous basic economic or finance training or coursework as undegraduates.
  • Must work as part of a team on a finance project with an organization each fall semester (requires approximately 6 hours per week).
  • Must commit to being a Finance Fellow for the entire two years if you are a first year student and the entire year if you are a second year student.
  • Must do a finance related internship .
  • Must have a career objective in the field of community development finance.

How can I learn more about the Finance Lab? Each fall an open house will be held during orientation for first year students to learn about the Finance Lab. Students can also visit our website at http://www.newschool.edu/milano/financelab. Students can also attend one of the Finance Fellow seminars or set up a time to meet with the staff of the Finance Lab. Contact Makeeda Womack at womam499@newschool.edu.

How much funding do I get for the Fellowship? Finance Fellows generally get a minimum half tuition scholarship and all Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend depending on donors and eligibility. Fellows sometimes get additional funding.

Can I receive academic credit for projects? Possibly, if you register for an independent study with a professor and if you do supplemental work related to the project you work on with a community organization.

Can I audit the Finance Lab or attend some sessions? Students are not allowed to audit the Finance Lab. Announcements will be made when Finance Lab seminars are open to the student body.
