Transfer Credit

Students admitted to the Media Studies program can transfer a maximum of 6 graduate credits from other institutions. All transfer credit must be based on graduate work completed within the five-year period immediately preceding matriculation. Determinations are made on a case-by-case basis by a student’s academic advisor after matriculation in the program.

Bachelor's/Master's Accelerated Option

The New School offers an opportunity for qualified, upper-level undergraduates to begin graduate study while completing a bachelor's degree. Students may apply for accelerated status upon completion of 60 undergraduate credits. If admitted, a student may substitute 12 credits of graduate work for 12 of the 120 credits needed to complete the bachelor's degree. These "swing" credits are used toward completion of the graduate degree as well. Upon bachelor's degree completion, students must apply to the graduate Media Studies Program.

Interested students should apply to either the New School Bachelor's Program or Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts.

Taking Courses Outside the Media Studies Graduate Program

Students interested in taking graduate courses outside of Media Studies may apply for the transfer of nine graduate credits to be used toward the elective requirements of the M.A. degree. Students must have approval from their academic advisor prior to registration. Students are responsible for completing all other requirements (e.g., instructor’s permission, prerequisites, etc.) as detailed in the outside department’s or division’s catalog, and, if necessary, for transferring these credits after completion of the outside coursework. The maximum nice credits may be transferred from other New School divisions, such as Parsons, The New School for Social Research, Milano; and six of these nine credits may be transferred from another graduate institution.

Parsons M.F.A. Courses and New School Graduate M.A. Courses

Media Studies Program students may register for a limited number of Parsons M.F.A. and other graduate M.A. courses (max. one per semester), by permission of the instructor and their Media Studies advisor. Enrollment for these courses is limited. Parsons production courses will count as production requirements or electives. Contact the appropriate department for course lists and schedules.

Mobility Credit from Outside The New School

With permission, students may take up to two courses at another university for credit towards the Masters in Media Studies program at The New School. Students interested in this option should review the Media Studies guidebook regarding the policy for taking courses at other universities while matriculated.
