Shannon Mattern PhD, Culture and Communication, New York University
Assistant Professor
Profile:Her teaching and research address relationships between media and spatial theory and practice -- particularly the links among mass media, architecture and urban planning -- and connections between media and contemporary art. Her work is motivated by a desire to look “beyond the screen” or page, to the larger arena in which media operates, and to the fruitful convergences between media and other fields of creative production and scholarship. Recently a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania, she has also taught at NYU, Parsons The New School for Design, and Rutgers University. She is the author of The New Downtown Library: Designing With Communities (University of Minnesota Press, 2007), which was supported by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. Other work has appeared in the Journal of Architectural Education, Invisible Culture, The Senses & Society, In the Site of Sound, and Public Culture.
