Abstract: Essentially a Gambling People is a short video essay about gambling, the historicity of gambling in the United States, and the gambler in contemporary American society. Horse racing, casino gambling and Texas Hold ‘Em poker, which is enjoying wild popularity and running almost continuously on television, are the highlighted vehicles through which the very old human games of fate and fortune meet the modernist notion of the “gambling type".
