The New School Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL) is designed to raise the standards of trained professionals in the TESOL field and consequently to raise the standards of the profession itself. You can earn your MATESOL entirely online or coupled with a summer residency. Some elements that make the New School MATESOL distinctive:

Concentrations
  • Teaching
  • Curriculum Development

Political and Cultural Orientation

A major emphasis of the program is on the political, economic, cultural, and ethical implications of teaching English in a time of intense globalization.

Flexible Scheduling

The MATESOL can fit around busy schedules. The degree can be completed entirely online in as few as four semesters online; part-time study is also available.

The MATESOL teaching concentration can be completed in 12 months if students begin with the summer intensive teaching program on campus in Greenwich Village.

Theory Leading to Practical, Hands-On Training

A defining feature of the program is that theoretical study always leads to practical application. The program provides a solid grounding in linguistics with hands-on, practical training in a professional concentration. An internship, practicum, or professional project is available for both concentrations.

International Faculty

The faculty and course developers have been chosen from among the best, most experienced, and most respected TESOL professionals from around the world, including teacher educators, publishers, writers, curriculum designers, and program administrators. This program is neither U.S. nor U.K. centric but rather reflects the global reality of the English language teaching profession today.
