Kenny Barron performing at a Spring 1997 "Jazz at the New School" concert
For a number of years, Paul Weinsten, chair emeritus of the Jazz Advisory Board and devoted supporter of the Jazz Program, has presented the "Jazz at the New School" concert series, formerly known as "Jazz at Six." Showcasing such internationally renowned Jazz musicians as saxophonists Lee Konitz and Billy Harper, and pianists Toshiko Akiyoshi and Kenny Barron, "Jazz at the New School" offers three to four performances a season in the new Jazz Performance Space at 55 West 13th Street.
Starting the season, Chico Hamilton, one of the innovators of jazz drumming and an original member of the Jazz faculty, opened the series with his critically acclaimed band. Jerry Dodgian, Steve LaSpina and Ben Riley joined Dick Katz, pianist and co-founder of Milestone Records, for an October performance. Leading artists among the new generation of jazz musicians, Mannes/New School Jazz Program alumni appeared in concert for the final performance of the fall series. With musicians Larry Goldings and Virginia Mayhew, alumni gathered in the Performance Space to share their music with the new up and coming Jazz students in the program.

Offering an unique and intimate opportunity to listen to world class Jazz, the spring series is guaranteed to be another all-star line up.
