Comparing classical European music to traditional Jewish and Arabic music,
Mr. Dalal and two members of the ensemble provided an introduction to the
fundamentals of Middle Eastern Music in one of the few master classes given
by the group in the United States. On the importance of continued musical
exchanges between the East and West, Dalal stated, "we are living in a period
of cross cultures and world music will be the musical phenomenon of the 21st
century, as jazz was for the 20th century."
Yair Dalal and the Al Ol Ensemble made their U.S. debut at Symphony Space on October 12th. Funding for the master class was made possible by the Israeli Consulate in New York City.
