Carter Brey, cello, will perform Elgar's Cello Concerto with the New York Philharmonic under André Previn.

Poundie Burstein, techniques of music, Terry Champlin, techniques of music, and Thomas Sauer, piano, each received grants from the New School Faculty and Curriculum Development Fund.

Chico Hamilton, percussion (Jazz), and his band Europhia recently performed in concert at one of New York City's newest jazz clubs. In a review of the performance, Mr. Hamilton was described as an "adventuresome gentleman, driving his band like a boxing coach, percussing with enormous power as well as tonal subtlety."

Leonard Hindell, bassoon, performs in the New Jersey Chamber Music Society 1997-98 Mainstage Series.

Li-Chen Hwang, piano (Preparatory), was featured in a New York magazine article on New York's finest music teachers for young artists.

David Karkauer, violin (Preparatory and Extension), is featured on the new Kronos Quartet recording The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind (Nonesuch Records).

Chin Kim, violin, performed as a soloist with the Yewon-Yeko Orchestra at the Ho-Am Art Hall and appeared as a guest artist on the Hour of Power program televised worldwide.

Antonia Lavanne, voice, conducted a vocal course in Urbania, Italy. World renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti visited one of the classes during his stay in Urbania (see photo).

Rhoda Levine, opera, received high praise from The New York Times, The New York Observer, and New York Magazine for directing Glimmerglass Opera's production of Floyd's Of Mice and Men. Charles Michener of The New York Observer wrote, "Ms. Levine's stage work resulted in an ease of ensemble singing that I've seldom seen on an opera stage."

David Loeb, composition and techniques of music, received second prize and the audience award for his composition Het Nieuwe Danserye at the Traynor Memorial Competition. His Eleven Preludes for piccolo performed by Susan Glaser was also released on Koch International.

Frank Nemhauser, (B.M. Œ76, Conducting) Associate Dean, was the subject of a feature article in Yankee magazine for his work as Director of Music for the Berkshire Choral Festival.

The Newman & Oltman Guitar Duo, ensemble-in-residence, celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new CD release on MusicMasters Classics/BMG -- Cantos de España: Songs of Spain -- featuring Spanish Romantic works by Isaac Albé#233;niz.

Hai-Ye Ni, cellist in ensemble-in-residence The Mannes Trio, was the subject of a cover article for Strings magazine.

Peter Serkin, piano, performed "Music for Two Pianos" with András Schiff at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Madeleine Shapiro, Director of Contemporary Ensemble, is the director of the newly formed chamber ensemble ModernWorks! whose season will include appearances at New York's Sonic Boom Festival and the Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse.

Faye-Ellen Silverman (B.M. Œ67, Composition), composition, served as composer-in-residence for the second International Women's Brass Conference where she organized two panel discussions, a listening corner for new scores, and other activities.

David Taylor, trombone, performed with seven string guitarist Paul Nash at The JVC Jazz Festival.

David Tcimpidis, composition, had the world premiere of his piece Loss at The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and several of his other works performed by Music Under Construction.

Gwendolyn Toth, historical performance, and Mannes alumnus Adam Gilbert (B.M. Œ84, Historical Performance) were both featured in an article on "Living Music: Making a Living In Early Music" in Early Music America.

Reggie Workman Ensemble, bass (Jazz Program), performed in the Texaco New York Jazz Festival. Mr. Workman also appeared in concert with pianist and composer Myra Melford for the 9th season of Interpretations at Merkin Concert Hall.

IN MEMORIAM

Charles Jones, composition faculty, passed away on June 10, 1997 at the age of 86. In addition to his work at Mannes, Mr. Jones's teaching career included work at the Music Academy of the West, the Aspen Music Festival, and Juilliard. He was still involved with teaching composition at Mannes and Juilliard at the time of his death.

A highly regarded composer, Mr. Jones's vast number of works include four symphonies, nine string quartets and an oratorio. His symphonic works have been performed by such major orchestras as the New York Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra.

Frederick Werle, administrator and theory and composition faculty, passed away on May 15, 1997. Serving as Concert Manager from 1953-65, Assistant Dean from 1964-65, Associate Dean from 1966-73, Dean from 1972-73, and Director of the Extension Division from 1973-76, he also taught theory and composition. Mr. Werle was responsible for creating an Extension Division and the Extension Division Diploma Programs.
