Pavlina Dokovska, piano faculty member in the College Division, recently performed with Bulgarian violinist Evgenia-Maria Popova at the Office of the Consul General of Bulgaria to raise scholarship funds for Bulgarian students at Mannes. A native of Bulgaria and graduate of the Music Academy of Sofia, Ms. Dokovska has long supported young musicians from Bulgaria.
After obtaining her graduate degree from The Juilliard School, Ms. Dokovska went on to a critically acclaimed performance career. A First Prize winner of France's Claude Debussy International Competition and Italy's International Piano Competition of Senigallia, she toured to such venues as the Spoleto Festival and the Mai Musical in Bordeaux. Through these and other tours of Europe, the Far East, and in the United States, she received praise for performances that are highly charged with the brilliance of her technique, depth of interpretation, and emotional subtlety. With a long list of recordings on such labels as Koch, Arcadia, and RCA, she demonstrates her well-known affinity with French music on her most recent CD Groupe des Six (Koch Schwann) which was listed as a New York Times "Critic's Choice."

In 1995, Ms. Dokovksa joined the faculty at Mannes. "I believe teaching is another wonderful and beautiful way to relate to music. It is a very gratifying and rewarding experience, because when you teach you also learn." Deeply committed to helping her students beyond the one hour lesson, she recently performed in concert with her student Vladimir Valjarevic (M.M. Œ97, piano). One review of the concert hailed, "Their sweeping performance was breathtaking from first note to last." For Ms. Dokovska, this performance marked her first professional collaboration with a student. "I am always glad when I can provide opportunities to younger students. I have been very fortunate in my life to have great teachers and I only hope I can give back some of what I received."

In addition to teaching, Ms. Dokovska continues to maintain a rigourous performance schedule, including concerts, recitals, and master classes throughout Europe and the United States, and annual appearances at music festivals, including a long time relationship with the Southwest Virginia Festival.
