As you will readily see from this issue of Mannes Musings, the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program has clearly attained a new level of recognition within the university and the world. This issue also embodies the program's philosophy of the artist as mentor with its recognition of past artists, current faculty and students, and accomplished graduates.
After several years as part of the Adult Division, the Jazz at 6 concert series moved to the Jazz Performance Space last Spring semester. Produced by Paul Weinstein, Chair Emeritus of the Jazz Advisory Board, this concert series presents such renowned artists as Kenny Barron, Chico Hamilton, Lee Konitz, and others. Proceeds from the series support the Jazz Scholarship fund. The John Haley "Zoot" Sims room dedication is the first in a multi-year plan to name every room within the Jazz & Contemporary Music facility. The goals of this program are to honor legendary Jazz artists (many of whom teach in the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program) and build an endowment to support our mission. The appointment of Christopher Johnson to the newly created Jazz and the African American Experience Faculty position expands our commitment to educating the whole musician. Mr. Johnson will be developing the Liberal Arts curricular component of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, emphasizing the historical, political, societal, economic, and aesthetic significance Jazz has played in the 20th Century. As you will read, he is a vibrant and creative addition to our community. It is a pleasure and a privilege for me to invite you to read the article on LeeAnn Ledgerwood, recipient of this year's University Distinguished Teaching Award. As you will discover, Ms. Ledgerwood is the embodiment of the Jazz & Contemporary Music program faculty. At once the consummate performer and passionate teacher, LeeAnn is an excellent role model for our students. This issue's student spotlight is on bassist Carlos Henriquez. Although an entering Freshman, Mr. Henriquez has already had a rich and varied professional exposure to the Jazz community. Most importantly, he is representative of the increasing number of highly talented and dedicated students enrolling in the program. Finally, this issue highlights a member of our first graduating class: pianist, organist, composer, and Warner Bros. recording artist Larry Goldings. Not only has Mr. Goldings enjoyed a fulfilling musical career since his graduation, he is now sharing his experiences with the next generation of students by joining our faculty. As you will discover reading about the latest facets of our program, our distinguished faculty, our outstanding students, and our accomplished graduates, the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program has grown considerably from its humble beginnings in 1986. It is indeed an honor for me to serve as the Associate Dean and Director of this internationally acclaimed program. Please feel free to telephone or visit us here at our new location in the Village. |
