1942 Julius Rudel (Dip. '42, Conducting) conducted the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Avery Fisher Hall for Great Performers at Lincoln Center. 1962 Eve Queler (Dip. '62, Conducting), receiving rave reviews for her leadership of the Frankfurt Opera, again conducted Rossini's Tancredi with the Opera Orchestra of New York. She will also lead the ensemble for performances of Verdi's Jérusalem and Donizetti's Poliuto in February and May. 1963 Elisabeth Wright (B.S. '63, Piano) performed in concert with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra at Vancouver Early Music Festival 1997. 1969 Murray Perahia (B.S. '69, Conducting) received high praise from The New York Times for his April recital at Carnegie Hall and performed in concert at Avery Fisher Hall for Great Performers at Lincoln Center. Frederica von Stade (B.M. '69, Voice) performed in San Francisco Opera's new production of Debussy's Pellé#233;as et Mé#233;lisande. 1971 Sung Kwak (B.S. '71, Conducting), new Music Director of The Pusan Philharmonic Orchestra, led the ensemble in a highly praised performance at Carnegie Hall. 1975 Myun-Whun Chung (Dip. '74, Piano; B.M. '75, Conducting) conducted the New York Philharmonic in a performance of Messiaen's L'Ascencion and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, and the Metropolitan Opera's production of Verdi's Don Carlos, featuring Mannes alumna Patricia Risley (see Mannes Alumni Spotlight.) He also directed the orchestra and choir at an open-air Mass led by Pope John Paul II in Paris. 1976 Raphael Klayman (B.M. '76, Violin) performed in recital with pianist Mitchell Vines at Regina Hall. 1977 JoAnn Falletta (Dip. '77, Conducting) conducted the Virginia Symphony at Carnegie Hall in April. She will conduct the Mannes Orchestra in concert on February 19, 1998. Joseph Rutkowski (B.M. '77, Clarinet) conducted the Great Neck North High School Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra in the Secondary Schools Music Festival at Carnegie Hall. He begins his 7th year as the Director of Music for Great Neck North Secondary Schools on Long Island this fall. 1978 Marcia Butler (B.M. '78, Oboe) received high praise from The New York Times for her performance with the group Parnassus at Merkin Concert Hall. Tim Page (Class of 1978), chief music critic for The Washington Post, won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. He was also a guest on PBS's News Hour with Jim Lehrer for a discussion on the life of George Solti. 1980 Yakov Kreizberg (B.M. '80, Composition and Theory), music director of the Komische Oper Berlin and principal conductor of England's Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, led the Orchestra in its Carnegie Hall debut, part of the ensemble's 1997 United States tour. 1984 Thomas Bagwell (B.M. '94, Piano) was showcased on WQXR's Young Concert Artists in September. Yelena Gurin (B.M. '84, Voice) was featured as a cantor on a PBS program on the historical/cultural background of Jewish and Arabic music. 1985 Todd Palmer (B.M. '84; M.M. '85, Clarinet) will perform as a soloist with the Chamber Music Company at Merkin Concert Hall in May. 1986 Yves Abel (B.M. '86, Conducting) conducted Bizet's Carmen for the Metropolitan Opera in the Parks Series throughout the month of June. 1988
Inessa Zaretsky (M.M. '88, Piano) and Gordon Minette (B.M. '78; P.S.C. '79, Piano) received high praise from The New York Times for their performances at the ³Alternative Schubertiade² at American Opera Projects. 1989 Miriam Burns (B.M. '79; M.M. '82, Violin; M.M. '89, Conducting) received high praise from Opera News for her leadership of the orchestra in Bronx Opera's production of Menotti's The Medium. Thomas Sauer (M.M. '89, Piano) piano faculty (College and Extension), performed in a series of concerts for children in the third to sixth grades with violinist Midori. 1990 Thomas Goodrich (M.M. '90, Viola) recently served as composer-in-residence for the Sierra Grande Chamber Music Festival in New Mexico. His new work for string quartet Circumradiant Dawn received its world premiere performance by members of the San Antonio Symphony. Lisa Philby Waters (B.M. '89; M.M. '90, Flute) recently won the position of principal flute with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Rodney Waters (B.M. '89; M.M. '90, Piano) currently works as staff pianist at The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Norman Yamada (M.M. '90, Composition) presented a concert, billed as a retrospective of his last three years of writing, at the Roulette. 1991 Elizabeth Wiley (B.M. '91, Voice) was noted by The Times Argus for her "powerful soprano and stage personality" as the widow in Opera North's production of Argento's The Boor. 1992 Barbara Freedman (P.S.C. '92, Percussion) conducted The Metropolitan Festive Orchestra for a concert of "Beethoven, Broadway and beyond..." and the Island Lyric Opera for its presentation of Cavalleria Rusticana. 1993 Nína-Margrét Grimsdóttir (P.S.C. '93, Piano), Sigrídur Jónsdóttir (M.M. '95; P.S.C. '97, Voice), and Pei-Wen Chen (M.M. '95, Piano) performed at Scadinavian Fest 97 in New Jersey. Inha Kim (B.M. '93, Flute) is the principal flutist for Suwon Symphony Orchestra in Korea. Brad Mehldau (B.F.A. '93, Piano), currently working on his new live recording from New York's Village Vanguard, performed at Zanzibar Blue as part of the Mellon PSFS Jazz Festival. 1995 Cristina Altamura (B.M. '95, Piano) and Daniel Swenberg (M.M. '95, Historical Performance) received 1997 Fulbright Fellowships. Ms. Altamura applied her grant toward studies in Italy with world renowned pianist and pedagogue Franco Scala. Mr. Swenberg is pursuing advanced study on the lute in Bremen, Germany. Jolle Greenleaf (M.M. '95, Historical Performance) received a grant from the Frank Huntington Beebe Fund for Musicians to pursue studies at The Hague in the Netherlands. Wolfram Koessel (P.S.C. '95, Cello) performed Boccherini's Cello Concerto with the Julius Grossman Orchestra. Nahim Marun (M.M. '95, Piano), named Best Soloist for 1995 by the Sao Paulo Music Critics Association, recently released a CD of contemporary works by Brazilian composers. Kristina Bullock Valcarce (M.M. '95, Voice) received the J. Arthur Meyers, Jr. and J. Arthur Meyers, Sr. Memorial Award from the Women's Society of the Glendale Symphony Orchestra. 1996 Erin Gustafson (M.M. '96, Oboe) was appointed to second oboe in the Grand Rapids Symphony, formerly conducted by Mannes alumni Julius Rudel (Dip. '42, Conducting) and Semyon Bychkov (Dip. '76, Conducting). Kimbo Ishii-Eto (M.M. '96, Conducting) conducted the Boston Symphony Chamber Players in Ozawa Hall and served as Cover Conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood. He will return as Cover Conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra's 1997-98 concert season, when he will work with Maestros Ozawa, Haitink, Previn, and Sir Simon Rattle. Indira Mahajan (M.M. '94; P.S.C. '96, Voice) performed the role of Musetta in New York City Opera's spring tour of La Bohème. Jennifer Ruffalo (B.M. '96, Conducting) conducted The Avant Garde Chamber Orchestra, featuring Mannes alumna Susana Llanio as soprano soloist. Mannes in collaboration with Music Mountain presented three Sunday post-concert recitals, including a performance by Reiko Uchida (M.M. '96, Piano) and Biliana Voutchkova (M.M. '97, Violin). 1997 Byron Singleton (M.M. '97, Voice) performed in recital at Christ the Mediator Lutheran Church in Chicago. Biliana Voutchkova (M.M. '97, Violin) is featured performing a Paganini variation of the Coca Cola theme in a new Coca Cola commercial broadcast nationwide.
