Needs and Purposes

Mannes depends on the generosity of its friends and alumni for a significant percentage of its yearly budget. Your contributions are of particular importance in certain essential areas, and we encourage you to designate your gift for a specific purpose reflecting your interests and concerns. In addition, please remember that every gift, regardless of the amount or purpose, can serve as a catalyst for generating additional support. In fact, foundations and corporations look regularly at the level of contributions made by Mannes' best friends when considering extending support to the school.

College Scholarships. Of the exceptionally talented young musicians accepted every year to the bachelor of music and master of music degree programs and the Professional Studies Diploma program, many would be unable to attend without the financial assistance provided by the Mannes Scholarship Fund. Approximately 80 percent of all Mannes College students receive full or partial scholarships. In maximizing scholarship support for some of the world's most gifted young artists, Mannes has a double mission: to assure the quality of music making in the future by providing tomorrow's performers and educators with the finest training possible and to assure the continuing excellence and development of Mannes itself, since the quality of a conservatory is as dependent on the quality of its students as it is on the quality of its faculty and administration.

Pre-College Scholarships. When David and Clara Mannes founded the Mannes School of Music in 1916, their primary purpose was to provide an opportunity to study and perform music in the great classical tradition to children, young people, and adults who otherwise could not afford it. The Mannes Preparatory Division continues to fulfill this purpose with scholarship support for musically gifted grade school and high school students from the New York community,  providing economically disadvantaged young people with a comprehensive music education, including Techniques of Music, and participation in chamber music and orchestral programs.

Public Programs. Every year, Mannes presents numerous concerts and events open to the general public. These include Mannes year-long festival events, Mannes Orchestra and Mannes Opera presentations, chamber music festivals, student and faculty recitals, concerts by professional ensembles-in-residence, and master classes presented by renowned artists. Mannes depends on your support for the funding of the public programs which make important contributions to the cultural life of the community.

Facilities. A constant and critical need is the maintenance and improvement of the school's facilities. Throughout each year, much of the funding for this continuing and costly process of repair and renovation is provided through contributions from concerned and committed donors. Two such projects supported by friends of Mannes were the renovation of the Mannes Concert Hall and the construction of the John Goldmark Practice Center on West 65th Street, adjacent to Lincoln Center.
