Performing Ensembles

About The New School Chorus

The New School Chorus is an exciting ensemble, open to members from the entire New School and greater New York City community, that fosters joyful communal singing and offers participants a chance to explore a range of music and singing styles from around the world—everything from Western choral masterpieces to Eastern European folk singing, classic American jazz and popular song to traditional music. In rehearsals, members perform both written works and music learned by ear using a fun and educational approach to exploring the sonic possibilities of the human voice.

The chorus engages with the school and city community as much as possible in performances and other forms of outreach throughout the year. It is led by two members of the groundbreaking vocal octet Roomful of Teeth: conductor, vocalist, pianist, and composer Eric Dudley and violinist, vocalist, and composer Caroline Shaw (the 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner in Music for her piece Partita for 8 Voices, written for Roomful of Teeth).

The New School Chorus will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Tuesday, September 9.

Orchestral instrumentalists with various backgrounds are welcome.

The orchestra will perform four times during the 2014-2015 season. The repertoire is drawn from a range of musical periods and styles. Rotating conductors provide expertise and the opportunity to experience different rehearsal and conducting styles for each concert.
