Profile:Rhoda Levine (Stage
Director) has worked as director/choreographer on and off-Broadway, in London's
West End and for both CBS and NET television. On Broadway, she choreographed
and staged the musical numbers for PANTAGLEIZE, EXIT THE KING, WAR AND PEACE,
THE GRASS HARP, THE SIGN IN SIDNEY, BRUSTEIN'S WINDOW, BABY WANT A KISS, ONE
FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, YOUNG ABE LINCOLN, LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS, and
GIANNI SCHICCI (for the National Theatre of the Deaf). In the West End, Ms.
Levine staged the musical numbers for Charles Strouse's FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON
and the revue, HERE IS THE NEWS. Ms. Levine choreographed for the Metropolitan
Opera National Company. For television, she did all the musical staging for
DuPont's SHOW OF THE MONTH. She assisted Joe Layton on THE GERSHWIN YEARS.
Among operas directed were DER KAISER VON ATLANTIS (world premiere); FROM THE
HOUSE OF THE DEAD; MACBETH; ORPHEO; THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK; LULU; OF MICE AND
MEN; MARRIAGE OF FIGARO and LOVE FOR THREE ORANGES all for the Netherlands
Opera. For Belgium's Theatre de la Monnaie, she directed the world premiere of
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE; ALBERT HERRING; LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT; IL MONDO
DELLA LUNA and JOSEPH AND HIS TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. Ms. Levine has also
directed and the Edinburgh Festival, the Spoleto Festival (Italy/U.S.A), the
Jerusalem Festival, the Festival Cervantino (Mexico) and the Scottish Opera.
Among her credits in the U.S.A. is the NYC Opera, DIE SOLDATEN (New York
premiere), FROM THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD (New York premiere), OF MICE AND MEN,
MATHIS DER MALER (New York Premiere), LIZZIE BORDEN (PBS GREAT PERFORMANCES),
LITTLE WOMEN (New York Premiere) and THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOM X (World
Premiere). She initiated many of these works at the Glimmerglass Opera. Ms.
Levine directed the South African premiere of PORGY AND BESS when Nelson
Mandela became president. Ms. Levine has been Creative Consultant to Doris
Lessing and Philip Glass on THE REPRESENTATIVE and for Anthony Davis on THE
LIFE AND TIMES OF MALCOM X. Most recently, she was Creative Consultant and
director on WACONDA'S DREAM for Opera Omaha, working with Anthony Davis and his
librettist. Ms. Levine is also the author of eight children's books, two of
which were illustrated by Edward Gorey. Three Ladies Beside the Sea will be
republished by The New York Review of Books in June, 2010. She has also written
a piece with Luciano Berio, OPUS NUMBER ZOO. Ms. Levine has been on the faculty
of the Yale School of Drama, Juilliard School of Music, the Curtis Institute of
Music, Northwestern University and is currently on the faculty of the Manhattan
School of Music and the Mannes College of Music. Along with Philip Glass and
George Abbott, she has won an award from the National Opera Association. She
was awarded a peace medal from the Lakota Tribe for her contribution to
WAKONDA'S DREAM. Rhoda Levine is the director of PLAY IT BY EAR, New York
City's only improvisational opera group. Her most recent credits include stage
director and teacher for the Duffy Composers Institute at the Virginia Arts
Festival in Norfolk, VA, and director of LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION by Derek Bermel
at Cutting Edge Concerts at Symphony Space.
