Audition Requirements

Prescreening Round
All applicants for the flute concentration (undergraduate and graduate) must submit a preliminary audition recording via our online application. Based on this prescreening, they may be invited to the required live audition. *Exception: flute applicants currently enrolled in the College and Prep Honors program are not prescreened.

The prescreening recording must include the following repertoire only, which should be recorded with accompaniment:

  • Mozart: Exposition of the 1st and 2nd movements of the G or D Major concerto (with accompaniment).
  • A contrasting piece of the applicant's choice (with accompaniment).
  • Orchestral excerpts: Applicant picks three from the following list.
    • Beethoven: "Eroica" Symphony, last movement—measures 172–200
    • Beethoven: Leonore Overture No. 3—measures 328–360
    • Brahms: Symphony No. 4, last movement—measures 93–105
    • Debussy: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun—measures 1–4
    • Mendelssohn: Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream—two measures before P to the end.

Live Audition Round
Applicants must use an accompanist for all appropriate literature (Mannes will provide an accompanist, or applicants may bring their own). Applicants must bring sheet music for the accompanist.

Undergraduate Audition Repertoire (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma):

  1. One étude showing the applicant's level of technical and musical ability
  2. Two major solo works of contrasting styles
  3. Mozart: G or D Major concerto (1st and 2nd movements)
  4. Four standard orchestral excerpts

Graduate Audition Repertoire (Master of Music, Professional Studies Diploma):

  1. Mozart: G or D Major concerto (complete)
  2. Two major solo works of contrasting styles
  3. Five standard orchestral excerpts

Video Audition Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit a TOEFL score of 80 or higher in order to be considered for admission through a video audition.

  • Note: For the graduate audition, either 2 (the major solo) or 3 (the complete concerto) must be a contemporary work (composed since 1970). Alternatively, an additional solo work may be perfomed that meets this requirement.

Audition Requirements
Undergraduate Audition (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma):

  • Applicants in percussion and timpani must demonstrate thorough knowledge of fundamental techniques by presenting at least one study that shows technical proficiency on snare drum, timpani, and one of the mallet instruments.
  • Applicants will be tested on their knowledge of the 26 rudiments of snare drumming and all major and minor scales on the mallet instruments.

Graduate Audition Repertoire (Master of Music, Professional Studies Diploma): The requirements are the same as for the undergraduate audition, plus

  1. Applicants must prepare three contrasting orchestral excerpts.
  2. Applicants must perform a program of complete works from the standard repertoire that represents contrasting stylistic periods. (Repertoire should be performed from memory as appropriate)

Applicants must use an accompanist for all appropriate literature (Mannes will provide an accompanist, or applicants may bring their own). Applicants must bring sheet music for the accompanist.

  1. A fast and a slow movement from any standard concerto
  2. Two contrasting movements of an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita. (Do not take repeats. In the B Minor partita, a dance movement and its "double" count as one movement.)

  1. Scales and arpeggios in three octaves. Choose one of the following keys: E, F, or G major; e, f, or g minor
  2. An étude by Simandl (Volume 2 of Method) or Sturm STORCH-HRABE, or BILLE
  3. Two movements from a concerto or sonata chosen by the applicant
  4. Two excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire (Wagner, "Die Meistersinger" Overture; Beethoven Symphony #5 (Scherzo/Trio); Brahms Symphony #2, etc.)

Graduate Audition Repertoire (Master of Music, Professional Studies Diploma): The repertoire is the same as for the undergraduate audition, except that

  • Three pieces must be from contrasting periods of music, one of which must be a complete concerto or sonata (such as Hindemith Sonata, Bach Gamba Sonatas, Vanhal or Bottesini Concerti), and three contrasting orchestral excerpts.

Audition Requirements

Prescreening Round
All applicants for the voice concentration (undergraduate and graduate) must submit a preliminary audition recording via our online application. Based on this prescreening, they may be invited to the required live audition. *Exception: Voice applicants currently enrolled in a degree program at Mannes are not prescreened.

The recorded performance should be up to 30 minutes in duration and must consist of three works of contrasting style and language that meet three of the live audition repertoire requirements (see below).

Live Audition Round
Applicants must use an accompanist for all appropriate literature (Mannes will provide an accompanist, or applicants may bring their own). Applicants must bring sheet music for the accompanist.  All selections must be sung from memory.

Undergraduate Audition Repertoire (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma):

  1. An Italian composition of the 17th or 18th century
  2. An art song in German or French
  3. An aria or art song in English
Optional: 4. An aria from an opera or oratorio of the applicant's choice sung in the original language

Graduate (Master of Music, Professional Studies Diploma) Audition repertoire:

  1. One aria or art song in each language: Italian, German, French, and English (four songs; at least one selection must be an opera aria.)
  2. An additional selection in a fifth language may be presented at the applicant's discretion

Orchestral Conducting

Audition Requirements
Round I: Evaluation

  • Applicants must demonstrate above-average ability in theory and ear training.
  • Applicants are given piano and instrumental dictation.
  • Applicants are tested on musicianship necessary for conductors (terminology, knowledge of orchestral literature and music history, conducting technique, etc).
  • Applicants are interviewed by members of the Techniques of Music faculty about their keyboard skills, score-reading ability, and knowledge of orchestral literature.

Applicants may be eliminated on the basis of these evaluations.

Round II: Conducting Two Pianists
Applicants who are invited to Round II are asked to conduct a piano duo. The repertoire will be announced at least two weeks before the audition date.

Round III: Conducting an Orchestra
Applicants invited to Round III are asked to conduct an orchestra or other large ensemble. The repertoire will be announced at least two weeks before the audition date.

Composition

Audition Requirements

Prescreening Round
All applicants for the composition concentration (undergraduate and graduate) must submit a portfolio of sample scores for faculty review via our online application. Based on this prescreening, they may be invited to the required live interview. *Exception: Composition applicants currently enrolled in the College and Prep Honors program are not prescreened.

  • Applicants should submit PDFs of three recent scores (preferably written within the last two years) accompanied by corresponding sound files, if available (live performance recordings are preferred over MIDI files).
  • If a work is multimedia in nature, a video file may be submitted. If a piece is not notable (for example, an electronic piece), a sound file should be submitted, accompanied by a written description of the piece and its concept, in lieu of a score.
  • Master of Music and Professional Studies Diploma applicants are encouraged to submit an orchestra or large ensemble work as at least one of their scores.

Live Interview Round
Undergraduate Interview Requirements (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma):

  • Applicants must bring representative compositions of the past two years for review.
  • Scores should be brought in triplicate (properly bound, not loose pages) accompanied by CDs of corresponding performances if available. Live performance recordings are preferred over MIDI files.
  • If a work is multimedia in nature, a video file may be brought. If a piece is not notable by nature (for example, an electronic piece), a sound file should be brought.
  • Applicants are interviewed by members of the composition faculty to ascertain their knowledge of music and general musical culture.

Graduate Interview Requirements (Master of Music, Professional Studies Diploma):

  • Candidates should submit at least four original compositions in diverse instrumentation representative of their work during the previous three years, and are encouraged to include at least one work for orchestra or large ensemble.
  • Scores should be brought in triplicate (properly bound, not loose pages) accompanied by CDs of corresponding performances if available. Live performance recordings are preferred over MIDI files.
  • If a work is multimedia in nature, a video file may be brought. If a piece is not notable by nature (for example, an electronic piece), a sound file should be brought.
  • Applicants are interviewed by members of the composition faculty about their backgrounds and musical knowledge.

Theory

Audition Requirements
Undergraduate Auditions (Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Undergraduate Diploma): Applicants must demonstrate superior ability in theory, ear training, and dictation.

  • Piano Interview: applicants must be prepared to play
    1. Scales and arpeggios in all major and minor keys
    2. J.S. Bach: Two-part inventions or French Suites
    3. One of the simpler sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven
    4. A 19th-century composition of the Romantic era
    5. A 20th-century composition
    6. Sight-reading
  • Applicants are interviewed by members of the Theory faculty to ascertain their knowledge of the literature and general musical culture.
  • Applicants are encouraged to bring examples of their work in harmony, counterpoint, and music analysis, and papers on musical topics that demonstrate their writing ability.

Graduate Auditions (Master of Music, Professional Studies Diploma): The same piano interview repertoire as for the undergraduate audition (see above) plus

  • Applicants must demonstrate
    • Outstanding competence in harmony and counterpoint (including chromaticism and imitative counterpoint)
    • Some background in analysis (not necessarily Schenkerian)
    • Experience in composition in traditional styles and forms (fugue, sonata, motet, etc.)
    • Competence in melodic, harmonic, and contrapuntal dictation
    • Considerable skill in solfège and in score-reading and figured bass at the piano
    • At least an intermediate-level of ability to play the piano
  • Applicants are interviewed by members of the Theory faculty to ascertain their knowledge of the literature and general musical culture.
  • Applicants are encouraged to bring examples of their work in harmony, counterpoint, and music analysis, and papers on musical topics that demonstrate their writing ability.
