Community Outreach

Mannes's Community Outreach program was started in 1979 by Associate Professor Elizabeth Aaron, who also serves as Director of Community Services. The program provides students with important public performance experience through solo recitals, duos, trios and quartets, and larger ensembles.

Regular performances include:

  • Concerts at the Morgan Library & Museum Atrium every Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 pm (year round; open to the public; no admission fee on Friday evenings). 
  • Wind and brass concerts at Pier 45 for the Hudson River Park Trust (public welcome)
  • Monthly concerts at Kittay House in the Bronx (Federation of Jewish Philanthropists) and at the 74th Street Home, a senior center located near Mannes
  • Two concerts a month at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital

The first performance of the M.T.A. Subway program was by a Mannes Brass Quintet, and Mannes students have played at the Central Park Conservancy events for the past 19 summers.  Students regularly perform at locations including senior citizen centers, nursing homes and hospitals, schools, and museums, as well as at higher profile venues, including City Hall and Gracie Mansion, and at Morgan LIbrary events and openings, and opening ceremonies at "pocket parks" for the Bloomberg administration. Philanthropic organizations have awarded support to Mannes to underwrite the cost of presenting events in social service settings. 

Mannes in Schools

Mannes students have been active in bringing music to the community through educational outreach programs. Mannes developed programs at the Boys Choir of Harlem Academy, placing graduates as theory and ear training teachers, choir leaders, and accompanists. Through the After-School Corporation program, Mannes placed choral directors and accompanists at C.S. 6 and Roosevelt High School in partnership with Phipps Houses. Recently, Mannes students taught violin, class piano, flute, clarinet, and trumpet at P.S. 166 and established ongoing violin classes at P.S. 9.

Mannes has been particularly successful in bringing young musicians into classrooms or after-school assemblies to demonstrate instruments and musical form, talk to young people about being a musician, and perform short concerts.  

Hiring Mannes Performers

Mannes Students are available to perform music for many private and public events, including:

  • weddings
  • high school and college graduations
  • street fairs
  • memorials
  • private parties of all sorts.  

The fee is $100 per student per hour, plus transportation costs outside the New York boroughs. Performers are experienced musicians, endorsed by Mannes faculty, who have performed in many venues around the world.
