History
Founded by David and Clara Mannes in 1916, Mannes College The New School for Music has made a significant contribution to the musical life of America. Renowned as a violin and piano duo, the Manneses toured extensively at the turn of the century, bringing classical and contemporary music to audiences throughout the nation. As a result of their wide musical experience, David and Clara Mannes came to believe that the education of every child should include the study of music. To that end, they founded the David Mannes Music School, now called Mannes College The New School for Music, which has produced such distinguished concert artists as Murray Perahia, Richard Goode, and Pamela Frank.

The Preparatory Division continues to fulfill the original mission of David and Clara Mannes to develop cultured and literate future generations through the careful and complete musical education of young people. Its students, central to the history of the school, now have full access to the resources of a major conservatory.
