Graduation Requirements and Procedures

Students are solely responsible for completion of the requirements for their particular majors, as set forth in the course catalog. Entering students are strongly advised to keep a hard copy of thier program curriculum at the time of their entrance into the program, to serve as a personal checklist of their requirements.

In the last semester of their last year in the diploma program, students are required to submit a Graduation Petition to the registrar of the university. The petition can be found at my.newschool.edu

All candidates for graduation from the Extension Division Diploma Program must spend a minimum of two academic years in the division.

Graduation Requirements in the Major Instrument

Performance majors:

  1. The jury in a student's penultimate year will determine whether the student may graduate the following year.
  2. The graduation examination for performance majors will be a performance of no longer than 30 minutes duration before a jury consisting of Extension Division faculty members and the director. These examinations are normally held in April or May.

Composition majors:

  1. Composers are required to submit at least one representative composition at the end of every year of study. This submission will be used to determine the student's progress.
  2. Before the time of graduation, composers are required to submit a minimum of three completed compositions in fair copy to a jury consisting of members of the composition faculty and the director. These works should utilize various performance media and must include a composition for at least eight instruments. Guidelines for the other required pieces are developed by the composition instructor in consideration of the student's capabilities and progress. Compositions must be submitted by May 1 for spring graduation; the pieces submitted must have been written while in the diploma program.
