Dvorak: Piano Trio in E Minor, Op. 90 “Dumky” See and Hear the Morgenstern Piano Trio Catherine Klipfel (piano), Stefan Hempel (violin), and Emanuel Wehse (cello) met as students at the Folkwang Conservatory in Essen, Germany, where they were inspired to name their piano trio after nineteenth century German poet Christian Morgenstern. After two short years working together, the Morgenstern Trio emerged onto the music scene to win top prizes and awards. In 2007, they took first prize at the International Joseph Haydn Competition in Vienna, followed by second prizes at the Fifth Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and the prestigious ARD Competition in Munich, where they also received the audience prize.
In January 2010, the trio won the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio Award, the most prestigious piano trio prize in the United States, which comes with 20 major debuts in cities across the U.S. They have performed at many well-known festivals such as the Pablo Casals Festival in France, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Heidelberger Fruehling, the WDR Musikfest, and the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland.
Founded in 1957, the Schneider Concerts chamber music series is praised as being “one of the best deals in town for lovers of classical music” by the New York Times. The series has presented many of the world’s chamber music notables before their rise to fame: Peter Serkin, the Guarneri String Quartet, and Tashi made their New York debuts in Schneider Concerts, and Yefim Bronfman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Murray Perahia performed in the series early in their careers.
