About The Mannes Beethoven Institute

  • Thomas Sauer, Director

The 14th annual Mannes Beethoven Institute will take place June 1–7, 2014. This year's intensive seven-day seminar will include some contemporary music: solo and chamber works by Stephen Hartke (b. 1952). Hartke's compositions, recognized for their intelligence, intricacy, and eclecticism, will be studied and performed along with the Beethoven repertoire. Each participant will be expected to select and bring to life a Hartke piece with the same intensity they devote to Beethoven sonatas, trios, and string quartets.

The Beethoven Institute is held every summer at Mannes College The New School for Music on Manhattan's Upper West Side. The institute is open to music students and young professionals.

Applications are now being accepted in the following categories: solo piano; pre-formed violin/piano duo; pre-formed cello/piano duo; pre-formed piano trio; pre-formed string trio; pre-formed piano quartet; and pre-formed string quartet. A list of Stephen Hartke's works suitable for the Beethoven Institute can be found here. Any questions about the 2014 Beethoven Institute repertoire for either composer should be addressed to Thomas Sauer at

Enrollment is strictly limited to ensure that all participants complete the institute with a deeper musical understanding of Beethoven and a new awareness of American master Stephen Hartke.
