Supplemental Materials

Supplemental materials must be postmarked by application deadline dates.

Official Transcripts
All applicants must arrange for official transcripts to be sent to the Mannes Office of Admission from their high school or secondary school and/or every college or university attended. Transfer applicants (see below) who have completed fewer than 24 college credits must submit both secondary school and college transcripts. Transcripts must be received by Mannes in a sealed and signed envelope.

Transfer Applicants and Transfer Credits
Mannes defines a Transfer Student as any student who was previously matriculated at another college or university. Credits for courses taken elsewhere are not automatically transferable. Music courses taken elsewhere may be approved tentatively as meeting certain Mannes degree requirements pending the results of the student's placement tests, interview, and transcript evaluation.

Graduate Program Applicants
Students applying to graduate programs are only required to provide college transcripts. Students admitted to the Master of Music program must have completed a bachelor's degree or its equivalent prior to enrollment. Students admitted to the Professional Studies Diploma program must have completed at least a bachelor's degree or conservatory diploma prior to enrollment, but a master's degree is preferred.

Letters of Recommendation
Every applicant must submit two letters of reference. The first letter should be written by a recent music teacher or professional musician and address the applicant's musical talent and performance ability. The second letter should be written by a teacher or guidance counselor familiar with the applicant's academic aptitude.

Official TOEFL Score
Applicants whose first language is other than English, must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and have the official score sent to Mannes by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Mannes defines an applicant's "first language" as the language of the country in which the student has completed his or her primary (elementary) school education.

Submitted TOEFL scores must be no more than two years old. Scores more than two years old are only accepted if the applicant has been studying in a college or university in the United States since the test was taken and sends a letter to the Office of Admission requesting waiver of this policy.

To locate a TOEFL testing center, visit www.toefl.org or call (in the United States) 800.go.toefl. Please allow 10 to 12 weeks for the official test scores to arrive at Mannes. Schedule your test dates accordingly. The New School/Mannes institutional code is 2398.

Mailing Supplemental Materials to the Office of Admission

Original documents must be mailed to the Mannes Office of Admission. Photocopies, faxes, and PDFs are not acceptable. To ensure that your supplemental materials are received by the Office of Admission, we strongly recommend that applicants use certified mail or another traceable mail service. Please do not send any unsolicited materials, such as headshots, reviews, concert programs, etc.
