Services offered by the University Learning Center (ULC) are available by appointment and on a walk-in basis. All sessions start on the hour and are 50 minutes long.
Whenever you come in for tutoring, please bring your assignment sheets and double-spaced copies of the paper you are working on. Tutors do not work with laptops, and the ULC does not provide printing services, so you must print copies of your papers before coming in for your session.
How to Make an Appointment
To book an appointment, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Log in to Starfish CONNECT™.
Step 2: Click "Services," located at the top of the screen.
Step 3: You will see a list titled Academic Resources; choose the Learning Center service that works best for you: ESL, General Tutoring, Graduate Writing, or Math.
Step 4: To schedule an appointment, use the "Schedule Online" link that appears next to the description of the service. If you wish to work with a specific tutor, choose the "Schedule Online" button next to his or her name.
Step 5: Choose the day and time that work best for you, then click "Sign Up." You must click "Submit" to complete your reservation. You will immediately receive a confirmation email from Starfish; if you do not receive one, the appointment was not booked.
Please note that you can have only one appointment on the scheduler at a time. Once your session ends, you can then schedule another appointment. This policy is in place to ensure that all New School students have access to our services.
In addition to offering scheduled sessions, tutors are available for walk-ins during regular ULC office hours. Walk-ins are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, so students who arrive early are more likely to get a session. Students are seen at the beginning of the hour and will not be accommodated later than 20 minutes past the hour. There is no limit to the number of walk-in sessions a student can have.
Cancellations and No-Shows
You will receive a no-show notice by email if
- You did not show up for an appointment and did not cancel the appointment at least three hours in advance.
- You arrived more than ten minutes late to an appointment.*
*If a student has not arrived by ten minutes after the start time of an appointment, the session will be canceled and the time will be given away if a walk-in student is waiting for a session.
Students with three no-shows in a semester lose the privilege of scheduling appointments, although they can still use walk-in services. Missing a two-hour appointment counts as two no-shows.
Faculty members who require students to use the ULC often ask for documentation of the conferences. Confirmation forms describe the content of sessions and include the tutor's suggestions and the student's next steps. Students who need confirmation forms should request them from the tutor at the beginning of the session.
