Services offered by the University Learning Center (ULC) are available by appointment and on a walk-in basis. All sessions start on the hour and are 50 minutes long.
Whenever you come in for tutoring, please bring your assignment sheets and double-spaced copies of the paper you are working on. Tutors do not work with laptops, and the ULC does not provide printing services, so you must print copies of your papers before coming in for your session.
How to Make an Appointment
To book an appointment, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Log in to Starfish CONNECT™.
Step 2: Click "Success Network," located at the top of the screen.
Step 3: You will see a list of Offices. University Learning Center listings are on the second and third pages.
Step 4: Choose the service that best suits your needs: ESL, General Tutoring, Graduate Writing, Math, and Midtown location. Please note that only MA and PhD students may book sessions with graduate writing tutors.
Step 5: If you wish to work with a specific tutor, choose the "schedule online" button next to his or her name. If you simply wish to schedule an appointment at a particular time, use the "schedule online" link that appears next to the description of the service.
Step 6: Choose the day and time that works best for you. Click "Sign Up" to complete your reservation and book your appointment.
Please note that you can have only one appointment on the scheduler at a time. Once your session ends, you can schedule another appointment. This system ensures that all New School students have an equal opportunity to book appointments with us. If you do book more than one appointment, we will cancel all your appointments and send you a warning; if you do so again, you will lose your scheduling privileges for the semester.
Walk-In Conferences
In addition to offering scheduled conferences, tutors are available for walk-ins during the ULC’s regular hours. Walk-ins are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, so students who arrive early are more likely to get a session. Students are seen at the beginning of the hour and will not be accommodated later than 20 minutes past the hour. There is no limit to the number of walk-in sessions a student can have.
Cancellations and No-Shows
You will receive a no-show notice by email if
- You did not show up for an appointment and did not cancel the appointment at least three hours in advance.
- You arrived more than ten minutes late to an appointment.*
*If a student has not arrived by ten minutes after the start time of an appointment, the session will be canceled and the time will be given away if a walk-in student is waiting for a session.
Students with three no-shows in a semester lose the privilege of scheduling appointments, although they can still use walk-in services.
Confirmation Forms
Faculty members who require students to use the ULC often ask for documentation of the conferences. Confirmation forms describe the content of sessions and include the tutor's suggestions and the student's next steps. Students who need confirmation forms should request them from the tutor at the beginning of the session.
