English Conversation Groups
Is your first language one other than English? Do you wish you had a comfortable place where you could practice what you know and learn new vocabulary and expressions? The Learning Center hosts weekly ESL conversation groups (PDF) every Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. beginning September 30.
The group sessions are informal and consist of activities and discussions designed to develop your English speaking and listening skills and expand your vocabulary. So come, chat, meet new people, and have fun.
Are you struggling with your English pronunciation? Are you frustrated with people asking you to repeat yourself or not understanding you? If you answered yes to either of these questions, consider taking a free pronunciation class at the University Learning Center. In this class, you will train your muscles to correctly produce sounds in English, learn where stress falls in words and sentences, master correct intonation, learn to differentiate between similar sounds, and gain confidence in speaking.
This fall you can sign up for one of the following two classes, which run from September 29 to November 19:
Mondays, 4:00–5:15 p.m.
Wednesdays, 12:15-1:30 p.m.
To sign up, you must email Jackie Smith.
Classes will be held at 66 West 12th Street, room 609.
English Speaking Tutoring Service
To help you improve your English speaking skills, the Learning Center has ESL specialists available for one-on-one speech sessions. You can work on any aspect of speaking that you think needs improvement: everyday conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary and slang, making a presentation, and participation in class discussions. Just tell your tutor what you would like to work on.
When making an appointment, be sure to choose an ESL specialist and select "speech" from the options.
