Stephanie Browner, Dean, Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts
Stephanie Browner was appointed dean of Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts in 2011. She comes to The New School from Berea College in Kentucky, an institution nationally acclaimed for providing tuition-free liberal arts education to low-income students. As Berea's chief academic officer, Stephanie oversaw all academic programs and centers as well admissions and financial aid. During her tenure at Berea, she secured more than $2,000,000 in grants for academic innovation and led a campus-wide scenario planning process designed to ensure the college's continued excellence and economic viability into the 21st century. Her scholarly research in 19th-century American and African-American literature, the history of American medicine, digital humanities and postcolonial literature is widely published. She holds an AB in English and Spanish from the University of Chicago and a PhD in American Literature and American Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington.
