Martin has served as executive director of The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music since 1987. A founding member of the International Association of Schools of Jazz and member of its board from 1989 to 1996, Martin has worked in jazz education for over 30 years in 20 countries. He was chair of music at Long Island University, Brooklyn, and New York City project leader for "Study of Jazz Artists," a groundbreaking needs assessment survey initiated by the National Endowment for the Arts. He serves on the advisory boards of Newark Public Radio, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, the Montclair School of Music and Dance, and International Women in Jazz. A former jazz pianist, Martin holds both a BA and MA in music from Long Island University.
