Eligibility and Criteria

Full-time faculty members who have completed at least four semesters of teaching at The New School.

Part-time faculty members with status Post-Probationary, Annual, Multi-year, or Grandparented, as defined in the ACT-UAW contract.

Previous winners of the award are not eligible.

Note: You are welcome to nominate a faculty member whose eligibility status you do not know. All nominations will be reviewed and only eligible faculty members will be moved to the next stage of the process.

Criteria
The sole criterion for the Distinguished University Teaching Award is recent and sustained excellence in teaching.
Teaching excellence can be demonstrated by a wide array of qualities. The characteristics listed below are suggestive rather than exhaustive.

Impact and involvement with students through

  • Innovative and creative pedagogical approaches in teaching style, evaluation methods, and/or course design

  • Ability to stimulate intellectual excitement and to motivate students

  • Knowledge of subject and continuous growth in the field

  • History of offering courses that are intellectually and/or creatively rigorous and challenging

  • Promotion of a wide range of ideas and of a classroom climate that supports the open expression of diverse opinions

  • Responsiveness to the needs of a diverse student body

  • Openness and receptiveness to different learning styles and approaches

  • Maintaining an atmosphere of integrity, civility, and respect in the classroom/studio/lab

  • Providing support, encouragement, and inspiration

  • Accessibility in and beyond the classroom

  • Thoughtful mentoring and guidance of student projects

Impact and involvement with the curriculum and pedagogy more broadly:

  • Ongoing professional development as a teacher
  • Well-articulated teaching philosophy and insight into the learning process
  • Advocating for quality teaching
  • Participating with colleagues to further student learning
  • Willingness to work across divisional boundaries
  • Support of multidisciplinary approaches to subject matter
