Leysa Cerswell, MA Psychology candidate, The New School for Social Research (NSSR). Working alongside communities in rural Kenya (www.freethechildren.com) and with youth leaders in China, Kuwait, Mexico, Canada, and the US, inspires my commitment to social justice. I volunteer with the Association for Trauma Outreach and Prevention, a United Nations affiliate organization that provides psychosocial support for communities around the world. I work with Greenhope Services for Women an alternative to incarceration residential treatment centre supporting women with addiction. Together with Greenhope Alumni, we advocate for a more humane and effective drug policy grounded in science, human rights, compassion, health, and social justice. My research aims to address issues and concerns relevant to populations that are underserved or marginalized in mental health care. I support a talented team of researchers in Dr. Doris Chang’s Culture and Mental Health Lab at NSSR; a dedicated team of staff and researchers at The Centre for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto, Ontario; and the Centre for Victims of Torture in Dadaab Refugee camp, Kenya ). If you ever thought youth were too young to make a difference, check out We Day. cersl233@newschool.edu
