Kate Eichhorn, Assistant Professor of Culture and Media Studies, Eugene Lang College. As a cultural studies scholar, I am deeply aware of and committed to investigating institutions, including universities, as sites where relations of ruling are reinforced but also called into question. Indeed, one of the most valuable lessons I learned during my undergraduate and graduate studies, completed at three public universities in Canada, is that one’s work as an educator and researcher and one’s commitment to social and cultural activism can and should be understood as deeply intertwined. In short, my training as a scholar taught me to understand and embrace the university as a site of radical thought, political action, and cultural innovation, and these are the tenets that continue to guide my work as an educator, researcher, and member of the university community today. For more details on the places where my teaching, research, and activism intersect and for documentation of some of the projects I have carried out in collaboration with students and activist artists and writers since arriving at The New School, see my faculty profile and personal website.
