Prior to The New School, I co-launched and co-directed a university-community collaborative in the heart of downtown Richmond,Virginia through the University of Richmond's Bonner Center for Civic Engagement. I worked previous to Richmond in New York City where I was in program administration capacities for university-community partnership programs at Teachers College, Columbia University, and Lehman College. I hold a MA in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a BA in Communication Studies from George Mason University. Since 2003, I have called New York City my home where I raise my son. I volunteer at La Casa Azul Bookstore in El Barrio/Spanish Harlem and have served as a summer faculty member for the Sadie Nash Leadership Project, a social justice leadership development program for young women in NYC public schools. I identify as a bicultural, biracial and bilingual individual of mixed heritage - my mother is first generation Mexican-American from the Tex-Mex borderlands and my father is African-American from the South. I am interested in the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, class, and power relations. You can reach me at mejiaj@newschool.edu
