Evolution is a key part of a vision for The New School in which creative inquiry and civic engagement come together to produce graduates who not only respond to change but anticipate and create it.
Over the past year, this kind of change continued as the University Center moved even closer to completion. When it officially opens in January 2014, the building will serve as a new focal point for a dynamic campus, providing state-of-the-art academic spaces in which our students will prepare for an evolving world and workplace.
Engagement with the world outside of New York City remains a priority even as development unfolds in our own neighborhood. Last fall’s launch of Parsons Paris was an important step in our plans to create an international network of academic hubs that will develop students’ global awareness and cultural literacy. Eugene Lang College expanded the university’s international reach by forming a partnership with Global Citizen Year, offering undergraduates service and leadership opportunities that translate into a year’s worth of academic credit at Lang. And working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity DC and Stevens Institute of Technology, the multidisciplinary Parsons–Milano Empowerhouse team brought its award-winning design to the Deanwood neighborhood of Washington, where it became a home for two families.
These programs and hundreds of others reflect the unconventional spirit that distinguishes The New School, making it an internationally recognized center of interdisciplinary learning. For nearly a century, we have fearlessly explored complex problems that demand collaborative solutions. Working together, the New School community will ensure that our university remains a place where ideas are contested, innovation is fostered, and learning takes place both inside and outside of the classroom.
I thank all of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, supporters, and neighbors for helping us advance toward a bright future for The New School.
